We as a society lean towards one of two things to satisfy ourselves, perhaps both if we are really discontent with our lives. Each one will lead us down a winding path to complete devastation. For we as humans in this day and age and particularly in the United States have the ability to achieve things almost instantly; this is the first one of the two. Instant satisfaction, we have the ability to get things when we want them. From easy Mac clear over to liposuction. We as a society no longer need to wait if we want to talk to someone we call them no more snail mail no more waiting. This is not all bad for things of the physical realm. The problem enters when we think of our God in the same way. As if He is a microwave, I just put in the time wait a few seconds and I’ve got mmm creamy easy Mac goodness. Though this seems absurd we sadly often view God as this; I just put in the time as prayer, or what have you, and ding God should answer. And of course he should give me what I want be I am obviously deserving of it (noticeable sarcasm). This leads to first of all to a bad view on our far too gracious God and leads to impatience.Secondly we are always discontent with our present situation. We say “well as soon as I’m able to play this position or achieve my masters or get this much money saved up in the bank or when I have a wife, kids, and a good job then I will be happy” or “when I am this knowledgeable about the bible, then I will be able to share and glorify God” We keep on pushing our happiness to future things. We even go as far as worrying about them, but for some reason this thought of future bliss gives an instantly satisfying feeling to our present lives. The frightening thing is that if we allow ourselves to live in the future we will never get to that point of actual happiness, we would be living on short term satisfaction of the momentary bliss of a future event that might not even happen. For when, or if, we get to that point in our future, we will still be looking farther into the future, and our present that was the future will completely pass us by with out the receiving the true joy that God has blessed us with for that very moment. For once we receive what we have been anticipating; we will only be looking for the next thing to anticipate. Because that thing is not God and eternity with him it will never satisfy.C.S. Lewis says “A more Christian attitude, which can be attained at any age, is that of leaving futurity in God’s hands. We may as well, for God will certainly retain it whether we leave it to Him or not. Never, in peace or war, commit you virtue or your happiness to the future. Happy work is best done by the man who takes his long term plans somewhat lightly and works from moment to moment “as to the Lord.” It is only our daily bread that we are encouraged to ask for. The present is the only time in which any duty can be done or any grace be received.”God will retain the future and therefore we should not worry about or think to thoroughly about it. Mathew 6: 27 “Who of by worrying can add a single hour to his life.” Our responsibility is to love God, “And we know that in ALL things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to his purpose.” Romans 8: 28. Like Lewis say it is our daily bread that we should ask for. The only thing in the future that we should contemplate in the present time is our eternity with Christ. Thinking upon our heavenly future differs in the thinking of our earthly future, in that, our heavenly future should remarkably affect how we live for Christ and how we act toward people in this present day.
